OXO Adjustable Handheld Mandoline Slicer (2015)
OXO Adjustable Handheld Mandoline Slicer (2015)

We set out to design a safe-to-use mandoline that cuts perfectly even slices and can accommodate big vegetables like large onions. The platform locks into place for cleaning, and the slicing guard grips domed vegetables securely and snaps onto the body for storage.

Role: Design engineer, partnered with industrial designer Reid Schlegel.

Company: Smart Design for OXO.

OXO Stainless Steel Pour-Over Kettle (2017)
OXO Stainless Steel Pour-Over Kettle (2017)

OXO asked for a set of pour-over kettles to round out their coffee line. There are 3 versions:

-Electric Kettle

-Stovetop Kettle

-Stovetop Kettle with Thermometer (pictured)

They all feature a carefully designed center of gravity, which allows for optimal pour-over speed.  A challenge was that they share some but not all parts, so I helped navigate the trade offs of sharing parts.

Role: Engineering CAD, some prototyping.

OXO Greensaver Activated Carbon System (2015)
OXO Greensaver Activated Carbon System (2015)

The Greensaver line was the first of its kind to prolong the life of fruits & vegetables by a) slowing ripening by absorbing ethylene gas with activated carbon  b) preventing molding by elevating the produce in a raised colander and c) controlling humidity by opening/closing lid vents depending on the airflow needs of the produce type.

Role: Design engineer, partnered with industrial designer Reid Schlegel.

OXO Expanding Wine Bottle Stoppers (2017)
OXO Expanding Wine Bottle Stoppers (2017)

We set out to build a wine stopper with a secure seal that uses the natural motion of corking a bottle to actuate the seal mechanism.

To use, you just drop the stopper into the bottle and push the top down, which expands the seal, then pull up to uncork.

OXO Microfiber Spray Mop with Slide Out Scrubber (2015)
OXO Microfiber Spray Mop with Slide Out Scrubber (2015)

The brief was to design an innovative cleaning product to compete in the growing spray mop market. After extensive user research, we discovered how helpful it is to switch quickly between wiping large surfaces and scrubbing tiny spots.

We designed the scrubber to slide out of the mop head when you step on the foot pedal and then slide back in to redock.

Role: Design engineer during early phases - brainstorming, concepting, early prototyping, user testing and early CAD.

Joby UltraFit Sling Strap (2012)
Joby UltraFit Sling Strap (2012)

My first project after Joby was acquired by a soft goods company in 2011, the brief was to design a camera strap for Joby consumers (hikers, travelers, adventurers).

The UltraFit Sling Strap is a cross-body camera strap that secures your camera close to your body when on-the-move and loosens automatically when you draw your camera up to shoot. The strap is looped back on itself three times through a pulley system that lets out or takes up slack. You simply move the camera to adjust strap length; no fiddling with buckles or small hardware.

Role: Project lead. User research, design & engineering.

Award: IDSA Design Award Finalist 2013

Joby GorillaPod Micro (2012)
Joby GorillaPod Micro (2012)

The brief was to design an always-on tripod for compact and mirror-less cameras.

The GorillaPod Micro attaches to the tripod mount of the camera. Its legs swivel out when in use and swivel back in for travel. A single ball and socket joint allows you to adjust angle and framing.

Role: Engineering support. Created CAD for alternate manufacturing methods, including die casting, stamping and metal injection molding.

Joby GorillaPod Ori Stand for iPad (2011)
Joby GorillaPod Ori Stand for iPad (2011)

Joby industrial designer Noah Balmer discovered this interesting lightweight steel/polypropylene laminate material, which can be machined to create living hinges and then folded to build complex structures.

The original iPad had just launched and we thought it was ruining people's posture, so we used the material to build out a case that doubled as a stand, with multiple ergonomic configurations for browsing and typing on an iPad.

Role: Engineering support.
